About

About Novel & Narrator

An independent audiobook publication: what it is, who writes it, and the things we deliberately do not claim.

Library shelves lit in warm golden light

Novel & Narrator answers one question: what should you listen to next? Not what is new, not what is selling, and not what pays us best — what actually suits your taste, the time you have, and where you will be listening.

It is published by Iron Mako Media and written by Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media. There is no editorial team, no panel of experts and no listening lab, and we would rather tell you that plainly than imply otherwise.

What is actually here

  • 82 pages, organized by the ways people genuinely choose an audiobook: genre, narrator, runtime, occasion, the book they just finished, and their child's age.
  • 347 audiobooks written up individually, each with its narrator credited from the publisher's own catalog record and its current Amazon price.
  • Straight answers on subscriptions — whether Audible is worth it, what Kindle Unlimited actually includes, and when the right advice is to use your library instead.

What makes this different from the other lists

Three things, and each of them costs us something.

We name the narrator on every pick. Half of what you are buying in an audiobook is the performance, and almost no recommendation list tells you whose it is. Every narrator named on this site comes from the Amazon catalog record for the exact edition we link — the publisher's own credit, not our memory.

Prices expire on their own. Every price here is pulled from Amazon's catalog, stamped with the date it was checked, and automatically removed if that check stops running. The page then falls back to “Check price” rather than showing a number that may be wrong. The failure mode is silence, not a stale claim.

We say when the free option is better. Your public library lends audiobooks through Libby for nothing, and we recommend it on every page where it is genuinely the right answer — see the Libby guide and the cheapest way to listen. We earn no commission on a library card, which is rather the point.

What we will not claim

This is the part most sites leave out, so it is worth being specific. We do not:

  • Claim to have tested these books. There is no panel here and no listening lab. What we offer is judgment about writing and performance, plus a published method for how the picks are made.
  • Publish a star rating. We do not operate one, so putting numbers on books would be decoration pretending to be measurement. There is no rating anywhere on this site and none in our structured data either.
  • Publish narrator biographies. We can verify the credit for an edition; we cannot verify where someone trained or what they have won. So we name the credit and stop there, and individual narrator profile pages are deferred until we can source real detail.
  • State a runtime we have not verified. The Amazon catalog does not carry listening length, and the retailers that publish it block automated access. So we show a runtime only where a published source states it, cited underneath the figure — currently 48 of 347 titles. The rest say “not published in our source”, which means we do not know rather than that the book is short.
  • Invent reviews or testimonials. There are none on this site, because we have none that are real.

The publisher

Novel & Narrator is one of several publications operated by Iron Mako Media. The site is independent in its recommendations: no publisher, retailer or author pays for placement here, and nothing on the site is sponsored.

Contact

Email contact@novelandnarrator.com, or use the contact form. We do not publish a phone number or a postal address — this is a publication rather than a shop, and inventing premises we do not have would be exactly the sort of thing the rest of this page is about.

Frequently asked questions

Who writes Novel & Narrator?
Mike M., the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media. There is no editorial team and no expert panel, and we say so rather than implying a newsroom that does not exist.
Have you listened to all these audiobooks?
No, and we will not claim to have. There is no listening lab here. What we offer is judgment about writing and performance together with verified facts — the narrator credit, the edition, the current price — and a published method for how the picks are made.
How do you make money?
Amazon commissions. When you buy an audiobook through a link here we earn a percentage, at no extra cost to you. That is the whole model, and it is why we can recommend your library when that is the better answer. See the affiliate disclosure.
Why do some books show no runtime?
Because we could not verify one. The Amazon catalog record does not carry listening length and the retailers that publish it block automated access, so we state a runtime only where a published source gives us one and we cite it. 48 of 347 titles currently have a verified figure.
Do you accept free books or sponsored posts?
No. Nothing on this site is sponsored, nobody pays for placement, and we do not accept products in exchange for coverage. If that ever changed we would say so on the page itself, not in a footer.
