Best-selling audiobooks

What everyone is listening to, with a straight answer on which of them deserve it.

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices come from Amazon and were last checked on October 6, 2026. It does not change which books we pick — see how we choose and how we are funded.

Popularity and quality are different axes, and a best-seller list that pretends otherwise is not much use. These are the titles that dominate audiobook charts and conversations. Some of them are genuinely excellent. Some are effective rather than good, and we say which.

A scribe's daughter is forced into dragon-rider training where most cadets die in the first year. The book that made romantasy a mainstream category.

On audio

Rebecca Soler and Teddy Hamilton split the viewpoints, which is what lifts the romance scenes above the page.

Who should skip it

  • The worldbuilding is thin next to the romance.
  • Ends on a cliffhanger that makes the sequel non-optional.

2019

A ghostwriter finds her subject's unpublished manuscript and cannot stop reading it. The book that made Colleen Hoover a thriller name.

  • Contains disturbing content involving children.
  • The ending's ambiguity annoys as many readers as it delights.

A florist recognizes her own relationship in her mother's. Enormously popular, and widely criticized by domestic-abuse advocates for how it frames what happens.

On audio

Who should skip it

  • The handling of intimate-partner abuse is the subject of sustained and serious criticism. Read about that before starting, not after.
  • The prose is thin and the emotional beats are signaled well in advance.

2021

A lone engineer wakes up on a spacecraft with amnesia and a problem that will end the planet if he cannot solve it. The best first audiobook we can point anyone at.

On audio

Ray Porter performs a non-human character with a voice no page can reproduce, and the book was clearly built for that. It is the single clearest case on this site of the audio edition being the better edition.

Who should skip it

  • The hard-science problem-solving is the pleasure; if you want character interiority, this is not that book.
  • The first hour is deliberately disorienting, which is harder to sit with in audio than on the page.

Which ones deserve it

PickVerdict
Project Hail MaryEarned. The best audiobook on this site, popular for the right reasons
EducatedEarned. The best-constructed memoir of its decade
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoEarned. Reliably loved, and the narration layers the performance well
Fourth WingEarned, with caveats. Thin worldbuilding; the dual narration carries it
Atomic HabitsEarned. The clearest practical book on habits, read by its author
A Court of Thorns and RosesPartly. Book one is the weakest in the series; book two is why people stay
The Silent PatientPartly. One very good twist; thin around it
VerityPartly. Effective, with disturbing content and a divisive ending
The HousemaidEffective rather than good. The plotting does not survive scrutiny; the pace is the product
It Ends with UsContested, and worth knowing why. Widely criticized for how it handles abuse
Popular and good are different axes. This column is the second one.

Why these particular books sell

The pattern is not mysterious. Audiobook best-sellers are overwhelmingly either fast and twisty (the domestic-thriller shelf), long and bingeable (romantasy and epic fantasy), or one clear practical idea (the habits and self-help end). All three suit the format: a reader listening while driving wants momentum rather than careful prose.

That is also why some of the best books in audio never chart. Say Nothing and Pachinko are better than almost everything on this page and neither is a commute book.

Where to go next

Frequently asked questions

What is the best-selling audiobook?
Sales charts move weekly and are not published in a reliably citable form, so we do not claim a single number-one. The titles on this page are the durably popular ones; Fourth Wing and The Housemaid are the two that dominate current conversation.
Are best-selling audiobooks actually good?
Some are and some are effective rather than good, which is a real distinction. Project Hail Mary and Educated are genuinely excellent; The Housemaid is a very efficient page-turner whose plotting does not survive a second look.
Why don't you show chart positions?
Because we would be inventing them. Audiobook sales charts differ between retailers, move weekly, and are not published in a form anyone can cite. Rather than make up rankings we order by how much we think the popularity is earned, and show the live Amazon price as the one real figure.
What kinds of audiobooks sell best?
Fast twisty thrillers, long bingeable romantasy and fantasy, and single-idea practical nonfiction. All three suit listening while doing something else, which is why careful literary prose rarely charts even when it is better.
Should I avoid It Ends with Us?
It is widely criticized for how it handles abuse, and that criticism is worth reading before you start rather than after. It is on this page because it is genuinely one of the most-listened titles in audio, not because we are recommending it warmly.
