The Audible free trial, explained without the sales pitch

What you get, what expires, what happens if you cancel, and the single best use of a first credit.

By Mike M.Last updated

We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices come from Amazon and were last checked on October 6, 2026. It does not change which books we pick — see how we choose and how we are funded.

Over-ear headphones resting on a dark wooden table

Audible's free trial is genuinely free and genuinely useful, and almost every guide to it is written to get you to sign up rather than to tell you how it works. The mechanics are simple enough that you should understand them before you start, because two of them cost people real money.

What the trial actually gives you

Audible has split into two things, and the trial covers both, which is where most of the confusion comes from.

  • A credit. One credit buys any single audiobook in the store, at any length and any price, and that book is yours permanently — including after you cancel. This is the valuable part.
  • Access to the Plus catalog. A rotating selection you can listen to for as long as you are a member. These titles are not yours; they disappear when the membership does. Many people spend a trial listening to Plus titles, cancel, and discover they own nothing.

The distinction between "bought with a credit" and "included in the catalog" is the single most important thing on this page. We go into the two plans in detail on Audible Plus vs Premium Plus.

The two mistakes that cost money

Spending the credit on a short book

A credit buys any book regardless of price. A four-hour novella and a forty-five-hour epic cost exactly the same credit, and very different amounts of cash. Spending your first credit on something short is the most common way to get poor value out of a trial, and it happens because short feels like a safer bet when you are not sure you will like audiobooks.

The fix is to spend the credit on something long and buy short books outright when they are cheap. That is why the picks below skew toward the longer end — see also the really long audiobooks, where a credit does the most work.

Forgetting the cancellation date

The trial converts to a paid membership automatically. That is not a trap — it is how every subscription works — but it does mean that the moment you start the trial you should put the end date in your calendar. If you decide to keep it, you lose nothing by having the reminder. How to cancel Audible walks through the process and what you keep.

What to spend the first credit on

The best first credit does two jobs: it is long enough to get real value, and it is well enough performed to show you what audio does that print cannot. If a trial leaves you thinking "that was fine, but I could have read it faster", the book was wrong.

The best books to spend a first credit on

Ranked by how convincingly each one makes the case for listening rather than reading. Prices come from Amazon at our last check; the credit covers any of them.

A lone engineer wakes up on a spacecraft with amnesia and a problem that will end the planet if he cannot solve it. The best first audiobook we can point anyone at.

On audio

Ray Porter performs a non-human character with a voice no page can reproduce, and the book was clearly built for that. It is the single clearest case on this site of the audio edition being the better edition.

Who should skip it

  • The hard-science problem-solving is the pleasure; if you want character interiority, this is not that book.
  • The first hour is deliberately disorienting, which is harder to sit with in audio than on the page.

Earth is demolished for an intergalactic dungeon game show, and the only survivors are a man in his boxers and his ex-girlfriend's cat. The funniest book in the genre and the best-performed.

On audio

Jeff Hays does dozens of voices and the production adds effects for the system announcements. This is the edition people mean when they say the audiobook is better.

Who should skip it

  • The system-stat interludes are an acquired taste.
  • Crude and extremely violent in the first hours.

Michael Kramer and Kate Reading split the viewpoints, which is the only reason a cast this size stays straight in your head over a listen this long.

Who should skip it

  • Enormously long, and the first third is mostly setup.

If you decide not to subscribe

That is a reasonable outcome and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. If you finish fewer than about one audiobook a month, a subscription costs you more than buying the two or three you actually get through. Before you commit, it is worth checking what your library offers — Libby is free with a library card and the catalog is much larger than most people assume.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Audible free trial really free?
Yes. You get the trial period at no cost and the credit's book is yours permanently, including if you cancel before being charged. The catch is not hidden fees; it is that the trial rolls into a paid membership automatically unless you cancel, and that catalog titles are not yours to keep.
Do I keep the book if I cancel Audible after the free trial?
Books bought with a credit are yours and stay in your library permanently. Titles you were listening to from the Audible Plus catalog are not — those are part of the membership and go away with it.
What is the best book to use an Audible credit on?
Something long and well performed, because a credit costs the same whatever the book's price. Project Hail Mary is the best single demonstration of what audio adds; The Way of Kings is the best pure value at over forty hours.
Can I get the Audible free trial more than once?
Audible's terms limit trials to new members, and eligibility for repeat trials varies by account and promotion. Check the current terms on Audible's own pages rather than trusting any third-party claim, including ours.
How do I cancel before I get charged?
Through your account settings on Audible's website rather than the app, which is where people get stuck. Put the trial end date in your calendar the day you sign up. Full steps are on how to cancel Audible.
