Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?

Worth it if you read a lot and your genres are indie-heavy. Not worth it if you want the books everyone is talking about.

Kindle Unlimited is worth it if you read a great deal and your taste runs to indie-published genre fiction. It is poor value if you want the specific books in bookshop windows, and it is the wrong subscription entirely if audio is your main format.

What it actually is

Kindle Unlimited is an all-you-can-read ebook subscription. You borrow titles from its catalog, read as many as you like, and own none of them. A subset of titles also include the audio edition at no extra cost — which is a real benefit and a smaller one than the marketing implies. Kindle Unlimited audiobooks covers that subset specifically.

What the catalog is really like

The honest description is that Kindle Unlimited is the best indie-fiction library in existence and a thin selection of traditionally published books. Many prolific indie authors publish exclusively there because the subscription pays them per page read, which concentrates enormous depth in the genres those authors work in.

That is a genuine strength and the reason the service has the readers it has. Entire subgenres — progression fantasy, reverse-harem romance, cozy paranormal mystery — are better served here than anywhere else, and if that is your reading, nothing else compares. If you mostly read literary fiction or current prize-list novels, the catalog will feel thin and you will spend the subscription hunting.

The audio question

Some Kindle Unlimited titles include narration. The quality varies widely because the indie titles that dominate the catalog use a wide range of production budgets, and a good number have no audio at all. Treat included audio as a bonus you occasionally get, not as the reason to subscribe.

Series worth the subscription

These are the long indie series that make the case for Kindle Unlimited — enormous, bingeable, and exactly the kind of thing the subscription model is built for. Note that the audio editions below are Audible productions with their own prices; the ebook is what the subscription covers.

Heath Miller's dry Australian delivery is most of why this series works, and the audio is the format the fandom actually uses.

Who should skip it

  • The protagonist's constant quipping is divisive.

How to test it properly

  1. Before subscribing, search the catalog for five books you actually intend to read. If fewer than three are included, the catalog is not for you.
  2. Take the free trial and borrow aggressively in the first week — the service rewards volume and you want to know whether you will supply it.
  3. Count what you finished, not what you borrowed. Borrowing is free and frictionless, which makes it a bad measure of value.
  4. If you finished fewer than three, cancel. Libby covers occasional reading for nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?
Worth it if you read several books a month and your genres are indie-heavy — romance, romantasy, LitRPG, cozy mystery. Not worth it for one or two books a month, or if you mainly want current major-publisher bestsellers, which are largely absent from the catalog.
Does Kindle Unlimited include audiobooks?
Some titles include narration at no extra cost, but it is a subset rather than the whole catalog and the quality varies. It is an ebook subscription with occasional audio, not an audiobook service. See Kindle Unlimited audiobooks.
Do you keep Kindle Unlimited books?
No. Everything you borrow becomes unavailable when the subscription ends. If owning books matters to you, buy them or use an Audible credit instead.
Are bestsellers on Kindle Unlimited?
Mostly not. Current major-publisher bestsellers are rarely included, because the publishers have no reason to put them there. What the catalog does have is extraordinary depth in indie genre fiction, which is a different and genuinely valuable thing.
Can I read Kindle Unlimited books without a Kindle?
Yes, the Kindle app works on phones, tablets and computers, so you do not need the hardware. You do need to be happy reading on a screen — it is not a print or audio service.
