How this site is funded

Affiliate links, in plain English: what we earn, when we earn it, and the rules that stop it affecting what we recommend.

A pen resting on a stack of books under a warm desk lamp

Novel & Narrator earns a commission when you buy an audiobook through a link on this site, at no extra cost to you. That is the whole business model. There is no subscription, no paywall and no advertising.

The Amazon Associates statement

Novel & Narrator is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Every buy button, price link and product tile on this site goes to Amazon, and those are the links that earn. We currently have exactly one earning partner:

  • Amazon — Varies by category (Amazon Associates)

Other retailers and publishers are mentioned on the site — Libro.fm, Chirp, Libby, Spotify, LibriVox — and we earn nothing from any of them. Those are cited as genuine alternatives, several of which we recommend ahead of Amazon where they are the better answer for you.

Links that are not buy links — citations, sources, a publisher's own page — earn nothing and are not marked as sponsored, because they are not.

How you can tell which is which

  • Every earning link carries rel="sponsored nofollow" in the markup and opens in a new tab.
  • Every buy button sits under a #ad label with a link back to this page.
  • Every page that shows buy buttons carries a disclosure above the first one, not buried in a footer.
  • Buy links route through a /go/ redirect on this domain, which is how the tracking tag is applied in one place rather than being pasted into hundreds of pages.

The rules we hold ourselves to

A commission is an incentive to recommend expensive things, so these are the constraints that exist to stop that happening. They are all checkable against the site.

  • Commission rate plays no part in ranking. The criteria that do are published in full on how we choose.
  • We recommend free alternatives when they are better. Your library lends audiobooks through Libby at no cost, and we say so repeatedly — including on pages where the alternative is a subscription we would earn from.
  • We say when a popular book is not very good. Several titles on best-selling audiobooks carry the verdict “effective rather than good”, which is not what a commission-maximizing site writes.
  • Every pick has a stated downside. A list with no downsides is advertising.
  • No paid placement, ever. Nobody can buy a position on this site, nothing here is sponsored, and we do not accept products in exchange for coverage.

Prices, specifically

Prices shown on this site come from Amazon’s own catalog, carry the date they were last checked, and are refreshed daily. If that refresh stops running, the prices disappear automatically and the page falls back to “Check price” instead of showing a figure that may be wrong.

Prices change without notice and the price you see at checkout is the one that applies. We never publish a price we have not pulled from the retailer, and we never estimate one. The mechanism is described in detail on how we choose.

Who we are

Novel & Narrator is published by Iron Mako Media. More about who writes it and what we will not claim is on the about page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay more by using your links?
No. The price is identical whether you reach Amazon through a link here or by going there directly. The commission comes out of Amazon’s margin rather than being added to your price.
Does the commission affect which books you recommend?
It is not one of the ranking criteria, which are published on how we choose. The clearest evidence is that we recommend your library ahead of a subscription on several pages, and earn nothing when you take that advice.
Are you paid by Amazon or by publishers?
We earn Amazon Associates commissions on purchases made through our links. No publisher, author, retailer or platform pays us for placement, and nothing on this site is sponsored.
Why do you link to retailers you don’t earn from?
Because they are sometimes the better answer. Libby, LibriVox, Libro.fm and Chirp all appear on this site as genuine alternatives and we earn nothing from any of them. A site that only ever mentions the thing that pays stops being worth reading.
How do I know which links are affiliate links?
Every earning link carries a sponsored-nofollow relationship, sits under a #ad label, and routes through a /go/ redirect on this domain. Every page with buy buttons discloses above the first one rather than in a footer.
