Short audiobooks under an hour
A thin shelf, honestly. Here is what we could verify at or just over the hour, and where the genuinely shorter audio is.
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices come from Amazon and were last checked on October 6, 2026. It does not change which books we pick — see how we choose and how we are funded.

This is the shortest shelf in audiobooks and the one where most lists quietly cheat, filling the page with two- and three-hour titles because strictly-under-sixty-minute audiobooks are genuinely scarce.
So, plainly: of the picks below, one is exactly an hour and the rest run between about an hour and an hour and twenty. Every runtime is taken from a published source and cited. We would rather show you six real figures than ten rounded-down guesses.
Why genuinely sub-hour audiobooks are rare
Commercial audiobooks are priced and produced like books, and a sixty-minute recording is hard to sell as one. The genuinely short material therefore sits in three places:
- Single short stories, usually sold individually or as platform originals — Deep Hole is one.
- Poetry collections, which are short by nature. Call Us What We Carry is the pick here, read by its author.
- Essays, where a single long piece can stand alone — The Clothing of Books is just over the hour.
Platform originals and short-story singles are where to look if you want a lot of sub-hour audio. They rotate constantly, which is why we have not tried to list them.
Verified listens of about an hour
Every runtime below comes from a published source, cited under the figure. Shortest first.

What an hour is actually good for
- A commute each way. One piece, complete, no thread to pick up tomorrow.
- Testing whether you like audiobooks at all. An hour is a low-stakes trial. See audiobooks for beginners.
- Poetry and essays, which reward full attention. Short enough to give it.
- A gap between long books. After forty hours of epic fantasy, an hour of something else resets you.
Where to go next
- For slightly longer, short audiobooks under two hours.
- For a full short novel, short audiobooks under four hours.
- For the opposite extreme, the really long audiobooks.
- For poetry read by its author, read by the author.
