The best audiobooks for five-year-olds
At five, chapter length matters more than story quality. These are the ones that hold, with a note on what is in each.

Five is the age where audiobooks start properly working, and it is also where most parents pick wrong. The instinct is to choose a book you loved; the thing that decides whether it holds is how long each chapter is.
What works at five
- Five to ten minute chapters, each complete in itself. A five-year-old will not carry a plot overnight.
- Repetition as a feature. Books that do the same thing each chapter are reassuring rather than boring at this age.
- No sustained peril. A frightening moment is fine; twenty minutes of jeopardy is not.
- A slow narrator. Frog and Toad is Arnold Lobel reading his own stories at exactly the right pace, and it is the single best starting point.
