Spotify audiobooks: what you already have
If you pay for Spotify Premium, you probably have an audiobook allowance you are not using. Here is how it works.
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices come from Amazon and were last checked on October 6, 2026. It does not change which books we pick — see how we choose and how we are funded.

Spotify added audiobooks to Premium, which means a large number of people already have an audiobook service and have never opened it. If you pay for Spotify, the first thing to do before subscribing to anything else is find out what your plan already includes.
How Spotify's audiobooks work
Premium subscribers in supported markets get a monthly audiobook listening allowance — a number of hours from Spotify's catalog, included in the subscription price. It is an hours model rather than a book model, and that single detail decides whether it suits you.
- You listen by the hour, not by the book. A twelve-hour novel fits comfortably in a typical allowance. A forty-hour epic does not.
- You own nothing. Access ends with the subscription, like music.
- It is in the app you already use. No extra download, no extra login, which is a bigger deal for adoption than it sounds.
- Availability varies by country and plan. Check Spotify's own support pages for your market.
Where the catalog stands
Spotify's audiobook catalog is large and has grown fast, and it also has real gaps. Long-running series are inconsistently represented, and some major-publisher titles are absent. The practical approach is to check for the specific book you want rather than assuming coverage.
What it does well is the mainstream middle: current literary and commercial fiction, big nonfiction, thrillers. The picks below are all in that zone and all comfortably inside a typical allowance.
Spotify versus the alternatives
| Spotify | Audible | Libby | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Included in Premium | Its own subscription | Free |
| Model | Monthly hours allowance | One credit, any length | Borrowing, with queues |
| Keep the books? | No | Yes, with credits | No |
| Catalog depth | Large, with gaps | Essentially complete | Large, queue-dependent |
| Long books | Will consume your allowance | Best value a credit gets | Fine, if available |
| Best for | Light to moderate listeners already paying for Premium | Regular listeners who want to own books | Everyone, as a first stop |

Using it well
- Check your allowance in the app before planning anything around it.
- Pick books that fit inside it. Starting a forty-hour epic you cannot finish this month is the main way people get frustrated with Spotify audiobooks.
- Use the sleep timer and speed controls — they exist, they are just less prominent than in a dedicated audiobook app.
- If you repeatedly run out of hours, you are a heavy listener and a credit subscription will serve you better. Is Audible worth it has the arithmetic.
Books that fit a Spotify allowance
Standard-length, widely available, and good. None of these will swallow a monthly allowance whole.

A security robot that would rather watch soap operas than talk to humans gets dragged into keeping some alive anyway. Short, sharp, and very funny.
On audio
Kevin R. Free plays Murderbot's deadpan exactly flat, which is the only way the comedy works. The sarcasm is all in the delivery.
Who should skip it
