What McFadden does is pace. Matching on pace rather than plot gives you a much better list.

An open book resting on a worn leather armchair in warm lamplight

Freida McFadden's books are not well-constructed in the way a golden-age mystery is well-constructed, and almost nobody reads them for that. What they do extremely effectively is move, with short chapters, a reveal every few hundred words, and prose that gets out of the way.

So the right read-alike question is not "what else has a creepy house in it". It is: what else do I not want to stop listening to?

If you want to trade up

Readers who go through McFadden quickly often want something with the same momentum and more behind it. The three that reliably work are Gone Girl for the unreliable narration done properly, Sharp Objects for atmosphere, and None of This Is True for a genuine formal idea. All three are better books; none of them is faster.

Where to go next

Frequently asked questions

What should I read after Freida McFadden?
More of her own catalog first — The Housemaid's Secret and The Coworker. Then The Silent Patient for one clean twist, and Verity if you want the same momentum with more craft behind it.
Are Freida McFadden's books well written?
Not in the sense a golden-age mystery is well written: the twists depend on withholding rather than clues, and the plots do not survive scrutiny. What they do extremely well is move, and that is a real skill. We say both things because recommending them honestly requires it.
What is a step up from Freida McFadden?
Gone Girl for unreliable narration done properly, Sharp Objects for atmosphere, and None of This Is True for a genuine formal idea. All three are better books and none is faster.
Which McFadden book should I start with?
The Housemaid, which is the one that broke out and the most efficient of them. The Coworker is the best-constructed puzzle and The Teacher is the darkest.
Are these good audiobooks or just good books?
Good audiobooks specifically. The short chapters and flat prose suit a narrator who can play the protagonist's compliance straight, and the pace is better served by a voice than by a page you can skim ahead on.
