Book spines on a shelf lit by a single warm lamp

LitRPG is where the best audiobook productions in publishing currently are, and the industry has barely noticed. Dungeon Crawler Carl has a narrator doing dozens of distinct voices, sound design on the in-world system announcements, and guest performers on later volumes. There is nothing in literary fiction that ambitious.

What the genre actually is

Two overlapping things, and the distinction is worth having:

  • LitRPG means the characters are inside an explicit game system — levels, stats, skills, announcements. Dungeon Crawler Carl and He Who Fights with Monsters are the two to start with.
  • Progression fantasy is the broader category: the plot is the protagonist getting measurably stronger, with or without a literal game interface. Cradle is the cleanest example and the best starting point for a skeptic.

Both grew up on the web and on Amazon rather than in traditional publishing, which is why so much of the genre lives in Kindle Unlimited and why the audio productions were free to be strange.

The honest warnings

This genre has two features that are either the appeal or a dealbreaker, and no amount of enthusiasm should hide them:

  • Stat blocks read aloud. Some productions narrate level-up screens and ability lists. Some listeners find this immersive; others find it unbearable. Sample before committing.
  • Length. Dungeon Crawler Carl has passed 150 hours across its published volumes. The Wandering Inn is longer still and ongoing. These are year-long commitments, and a monthly credit buys you roughly one volume.

Jeff Hays and Travis Baldree

Two narrators dominate the genre and either is a reason to try a book. Jeff Hays on Dungeon Crawler Carl does character work at a scale that is hard to believe is one person, and the production around him uses effects rather than straight reading. Travis Baldree narrates Cradle, The Primal Hunter and Beware of Chicken, and his unhurried delivery is a large part of why progression fantasy works in audio rather than reading as a spreadsheet.

Baldree also writes Legends & Lattes, which he narrates himself — a neat demonstration of how small this corner of publishing still is.

Where to start if you are skeptical

Cradle is the answer. Book one is short, the system is light, the prose is clean, and the series is complete. If it does not work for you, the genre probably will not, and you will have spent four hours finding out rather than forty. If it does, Dungeon Crawler Carl is the one to graduate to and the production is the reason.

Where to go next

Frequently asked questions

What is the best LitRPG audiobook?
Dungeon Crawler Carl, by a wide margin, and the production is the reason — Jeff Hays does dozens of voices and the system announcements get sound design. It is also the funniest book in the genre.
What is the difference between LitRPG and progression fantasy?
LitRPG means an explicit game system with levels, stats and announcements. Progression fantasy is broader: the plot is the protagonist getting measurably stronger, with or without a literal interface. Cradle is progression fantasy; Dungeon Crawler Carl is LitRPG.
Where should a beginner start with LitRPG?
Cradle. Book one is short, the system is light, and the twelve-book series is actually finished, which is rare here. If it works you can graduate to Dungeon Crawler Carl; if it does not, you have spent four hours rather than forty finding out.
Are the stat blocks annoying in audio?
For some listeners, very. Several productions narrate level-up screens and ability lists aloud, which is immersive to fans and tedious to others. Sample ten minutes of any LitRPG audiobook before committing — this is the single biggest dividing line in the genre.
Which LitRPG series are complete?
Cradle is twelve books and finished. Dungeon Crawler Carl, He Who Fights with Monsters, The Primal Hunter and The Wandering Inn are all ongoing with no stated end. We flag which is which on every entry, because it changes what you are buying into.
