Books like He Who Fights with Monsters

If the dry Australian delivery was half the appeal, the recommendation is a narrator rather than a book.

An open book resting on a worn leather armchair in warm lamplight

He Who Fights with Monsters works on three things: the system mechanics, the protagonist's relentless quipping, and Heath Miller's dry Australian delivery. The third is doing more work than people credit, and if it was your favorite part the recommendation is not another LitRPG series.

What you came for

  • The mechanics and the progression. The Primal Hunter is the closest structural match, and Cradle is the cleanest version of the idea in a series that actually finishes.
  • The comedy. Dungeon Crawler Carl is funnier and better produced, and it is the obvious next step. The Blacktongue Thief does first-person wisecracking in traditional fantasy.
  • The narration. Travis Baldree narrates three of the picks here and reads at a pace that suits this whole genre. Best fantasy narrators covers who else to follow.
  • Something gentler in the same world-shape. Beware of Chicken and Legends & Lattes are the cozy end.

Frequently asked questions

What should I read after He Who Fights with Monsters?
Dungeon Crawler Carl if you want the comedy done better with the best production in the genre, or Cradle if you want progression fantasy in a series that actually finishes.
Is Dungeon Crawler Carl better than He Who Fights with Monsters?
Funnier and considerably better produced — Jeff Hays does dozens of voices and the system messages get sound design. He Who Fights leans more heavily on its narrator's delivery and its protagonist's quipping, which divides listeners.
What progression fantasy series is finished?
Cradle, at twelve books. In a genre where almost everything is ongoing, being able to start something knowing it ends is a genuine feature rather than a detail.
Who narrates He Who Fights with Monsters?
Heath Miller, whose dry Australian delivery is doing more work than most readers credit. If that was half the appeal, searching his credits is a better route than matching the genre.
Is the constant quipping normal for the genre?
It is common and it is the most divisive feature of this particular series — some readers find it the charm, others find it exhausting by book two. Cradle and The Primal Hunter are both more restrained.
