How to cancel Audible
It takes about two minutes on the website, and the books you bought stay yours. Here is what to do and what you lose.

Canceling Audible is straightforward, and the only genuinely confusing part is what happens to your library. The short answer: anything you bought is yours and stays yours. Anything you were streaming from the catalog goes away.
Before you cancel: spend your credits
This is the step people skip. Unused credits do not survive cancellation indefinitely, so if you are holding any, spend them before you go. Follow the usual rule and put them on the longest, most expensive books you actually want — Audible credits explained covers why, and the really long audiobooks is where to look.
How to cancel, step by step
- Sign in to Audible on a web browser, not in the app. The app does not offer cancellation and this is where most people get stuck.
- Open your Account Details page.
- Find the membership section and choose the option to cancel your membership.
- Work through the retention screens. Audible will offer alternatives — a pause, a cheaper plan, a discounted month. One of those may genuinely suit you better than canceling; see below.
- Confirm. You should get an email confirming the cancellation. Keep it.
What you keep and what you lose
| After canceling | |
|---|---|
| Audiobooks bought with a credit | Yours permanently. They stay in your library and the app. |
| Audiobooks bought with money | Yours permanently. |
| Audible Plus catalog titles you were streaming | Gone. These were never yours. |
| Unused credits | Lost. Spend them first. |
| Your wish list and listening history | Normally retained with the account. |
| Audible Originals you claimed | Generally retained; check the terms on the specific title. |
Consider pausing instead
Audible offers the ability to pause a membership for a period rather than cancel outright, and it is not well advertised. If your reason for leaving is a backlog or a quiet few months rather than a decision that the service is not for you, a pause keeps your account and credits intact and stops the charges. It is often the better answer and the cancellation flow will usually offer it.
What to use instead
If you are leaving because the value was not there, the alternatives are worth knowing rather than just going without:
- Your library, via Libby. Free with a library card, and a much deeper catalog than most people expect. This is the first thing to try.
- Chirp for heavily discounted individual purchases with no subscription at all.
- Libro.fm if you want a credit model but would rather the money went partly to an independent bookshop.
- Spotify, if you already pay for Premium — you may already have an audiobook allowance you are not using.
- Free audiobooks for classics in the public domain.
And if the real problem was that you were not finishing books, the fix may be the books rather than the service. Short audiobooks under four hours rebuilds the habit faster than anything else.
If you are charged after canceling
Check the confirmation email and the date your billing period ended — canceling mid-period normally lets the current month run out rather than refunding it, which is standard and not an error. If you were charged for a period after your cancellation date, Audible's customer service handles refunds and the confirmation email is the thing to quote.
