Libro.fm vs Audible
Nearly the same catalog at nearly the same price, with the money going somewhere different. The app is the real difference.
We earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. Prices come from Amazon and were last checked on October 6, 2026. It does not change which books we pick — see how we choose and how we are funded.

Libro.fm sells audiobooks on a credit model very similar to Audible's, at a similar price, from a catalog that overlaps heavily. The difference is where the money goes: you choose an independent bookshop at signup and a share of what you spend goes to them.
If that matters to you, it is a genuinely easy switch. If it does not, the two services are close enough that the deciding factors are the app and the DRM policy rather than the catalog.
How they compare
| Libro.fm | Audible | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Credit per month, books you keep | Credit per month, books you keep |
| Catalog | Essentially the same major-publisher catalog | Essentially complete, plus Audible Originals |
| Exclusives | None | Audible Originals and some exclusive productions |
| DRM | No DRM — you can download plain audio files | DRM-protected, plays in Audible apps |
| Where the money goes | Shared with an independent bookshop you choose | Amazon |
| App | Workable, less polished | Mature, with better library management |
| Whispersync with Kindle | No | Yes, on participating titles |
| Rotating streaming catalog | No | Yes, Audible Plus |
The two things that actually decide it
DRM, and what it means in practice
Libro.fm sells DRM-free files, which means you can download a plain audio file and play it in whatever app you like, back it up, or move it to a device that has never heard of Libro.fm. Audible's files are tied to Audible's apps. For most listeners that is invisible; for anyone who wants their library to outlive a service, it is the strongest argument for Libro.fm and nobody mentions it.
The app
Audible's app is better. It has had longer and more money, and it shows in library management, Whispersync and the general smoothness of handling a large collection. Libro.fm's app is perfectly adequate and slightly more basic. If you are a heavy listener with hundreds of titles, that gap is worth something.
Who should choose which
Choose Libro.fm if
- You want some of your money going to an independent bookshop rather than to Amazon.
- You want DRM-free files you genuinely control.
- You do not need Audible Originals or Whispersync.
Choose Audible if
- You want the Audible Originals catalog or the Plus streaming tier. Audible Plus vs Premium Plus explains those.
- You read on Kindle and want Whispersync between the ebook and the audiobook.
- You have a large existing library there, which is a real switching cost.
Choose neither if
You listen occasionally. Both are credit subscriptions and both will cost you more than buying the handful of books you finish. Libby and Chirp cover that case better.
Books that are good on either
These are all mainstream publisher titles, so they are available on both services. What differs is who gets your money and whether you can keep the file.
Available on either service
Major-publisher titles with excellent narration, stocked by both. Amazon prices shown as the reference point.

A man lives in an infinite house of statues and tides, keeping careful notes. A short, strange book that is best met knowing nothing.
On audio
Chiwetel Ejiofor reads the journal entries with such calm that the horror arrives entirely by implication.
Who should skip it
- Almost nothing happens for the first third.
- Any summary spoils it, which makes it hard to recommend confidently.

- Episodic — it is a life, not a plot.
- The middle sags.

Two friends make video games together across thirty years and keep failing each other. About work and friendship, not romance.
On audio
Jennifer Kim and Julian Cihi split the two leads, which is how the long argument between them reads best.
Who should skip it
- Heavy games-industry detail.
- Both leads are often hard to like.
